Silicon carbide and tungsten carbide seal face materials are paired with fluorocarbon elastomers to deliver maximum wear resistance in abrasive slurry services encountered in fluid catalytic cracking units.
In thermal power stations and combined heat and power (CHP) plants, steam at temperatures of 540°C to 600°C drives turbines at the heart of electricity generation. While ultra-high-temperature zones use metallic sealing, the auxiliary systems — feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, cooling water circuits, and heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) — rely extensively on high-temperature elastomer seals.
EPDM seals are favored for steam service up to 150°C due to their superior hot water and steam resistance, while Silicone (VMQ) compounds are applied where flexibility at sub-zero startup temperatures combined with high-temperature resistance is required. For supercritical steam circuits above 200°C, FKM provides the required thermal stability with minimal compression set.
Pulp and paper mills operate an array of pumps, agitators, and refiners handling hot pulp slurries, caustic chemicals, and bleaching agents at elevated temperatures. Mechanical seals in this environment face the combined challenge of thermal stress, abrasive fiber-laden media, and chemical attack. The Andritz JCS2A series and equivalent designs use fluorocarbon elastomers in the secondary seal circuit to maintain sealing integrity at elevated temperatures while resisting the caustic soda and chlorine dioxide compounds common in kraft pulping and bleaching.

Temperature range: -20°C to +200°C. The most widely specified high-temperature elastomer in industrial sealing. Exceptional resistance to mineral oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, aromatic hydrocarbons, and many solvents. FKM is the primary material choice for M7N and M74N fluorocarbon alloy mechanical seals used across chemical processing, marine, and general industrial applications. Its fluorine-carbon backbone provides inherent chemical inertness, while optimized cross-linking delivers the low compression set needed for long service intervals.
Temperature range: -20°C to +327°C. The premium tier of fluoroelastomers, FFKM compounds replace virtually all hydrogen atoms in the polymer chain with fluorine, achieving near-total chemical inertness. Used in semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace, nuclear processing, and petrochemical service where no other elastomer can provide adequate resistance. FFKM seals carry a significant cost premium — typically 10× to 50× the price of FKM — but are essential in applications where downtime costs dwarf seal replacement costs.
Temperature range: -60°C to +230°C. Outstanding performance at both temperature extremes makes silicone elastomers ideal for applications requiring flexibility from cryogenic startup to sustained high-temperature operation. Common applications include static gaskets in automotive engines, aerospace fluid systems, food processing, and medical devices. However, silicone has limited resistance to hydrocarbon fuels and many solvents, restricting its use in petroleum service.
EPDM: -40°C to +150°C. Preferred for steam, hot water, and ozone-rich environments such as cooling towers and HVAC systems. Excellent resistance to aging and weathering makes EPDM a durable choice for long-life static seals.
NBR (Nitrile): -40°C to +120°C. The standard elastomer for petroleum fluid service at moderate temperatures. Widely used in hydraulic seals, O-rings, and pump shaft seals in oil & gas and automotive applications where cost-efficiency is paramount and temperatures remain below 120°C.
